Alina Janney

My name is Alina Janney and I am a third year PhD student in Fiona Powries lab. After initial training in cancer biology and immunology in Germany, I am now trying to discover new mechanisms which drive colon cancer here in the UK. I am a German – US American hybrid who loves a nice glass of Riesling after a long day of work and could spend hours at markets during the weekend.

Sara Danielli

I am Sara Danielli, a Dphil student in immunology at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in Oxford. While immunology is now my passion, I explored a few different disciplines before joining the Kennedy Institute. I completed my studies in Italy at the University of Pisa where, at first, I wanted to be a physicist. Two years of physics thought me that my interest lies in somewhat more alive subjects. So, I switched to biology. After trying projects in developmental biology, a master in virology and a few years in Oxford working on functional genetics, I decided that the immune system was my true call. Now I am studying how the innate immune system can recognise invasive pathogens and activate effector cells to get rid of infections, and it is quite a complicated business.

Fabian Fischer

After doing a Bachelor and Master of Science at the University of Bonn in Germany, I moved to Oxford in 2019 to start my PhD at the Kennedy Institute of Rheumatology in Dr. Jelena Bezbradica Mirkovic's laboratory. In my PhD , I focus on a protein called NLRP3 and try to understand its function during the immune response and during diseases caused by dysfunctional NLRP3 proteins. Besides working in the lab, I am a big sports enthusiast (triathlon and tennis) and a big fan of cooking and good food.
