A collaboration between PAHO and the EQUATOR Network creates tools in Portuguese to promote excellence in research reporting.

CSM's Michael Maia Schlussel, a UK EQUATOR Centre Fellow, introduces the EQUATOR Network's work in Brazil

The Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the EQUATOR Network, whose UK Centre is housed within the Centre for Statistics in Medicine, have launched their newest collaborative project to promote quality health research in the Americas. The new Portuguese interface of the EQUATOR Network website will translate key material on good research reporting and bring together existing Portuguese translations of reporting guidelines.

Well-reported health research can contribute to the systematic reviews that inform evidence-based clinical decision making and can be used to develop health care policies. Reporting guidelines and checklists help researchers to include all of the necessary information in their publications so that their studies can be properly understood and used. The EQUATOR Network promotes these reporting guidelines, mainly through its online database and resources. However, most of the materials on good reporting only exist in English, limiting their impact.

Since July 2010, the EQUATOR Network and PAHO have collaborated to develop a Spanish EQUATOR website, translate international reporting guidelines into Spanish, and increase the participation of regional experts in good reporting initiatives. Now the collaboration is extending its work to Portuguese-speaking researchers. The new Portuguese EQUATOR interface provides access to reporting guidelines and other key material in Portuguese.

The Spanish and Portuguese interfaces will widen the reach of reporting guidelines and further stimulate the delivery and use of quality research for healthcare across the America, in line with PAHO’s Policy on Research for Health.

PAHO/WHO is an international public health organization with 114 years of experience in working to improve the health and living standards of the countries of the Americas. Its Policy on Research for Health directs its work to promote good research governance and facilitate the use of research in healthcare, prevention and policy.

PAHO aims to support those who work in research and promote the dissemination and use of their research findings. The EQUATOR Network’s database of resources offers the researchers under PAHO’s remit the tools they need to achieve these goals.
