Whilst it is recognised citation analysis has its limitations, the process remains one of the best currently available tools for quantifying the impact of scientific articles in a particular field. This type of study also provides a valuable source of intellectual milestones both for new researchers to the field and senior researchers, encouraging reflection on the quality of prior scientific research and provoking thinking within the scientific community.

The study looked at articles published between 1948 and 2007, and the NDORMS papers were published in the latter part of the bracket between 1998 and 2000.
