The use of alignate gels containing collagen for delivery of adherent cells to a tissue site was described. The interactions between the collagen and β-tricalcium phosphate prevents loss of the protein from the hydrogels. It was observed that both human and rat mone marrow stomal cells proliferate within the alignate hydrogels when encapsulated with granules of either hydroxyapatite or insoluble collagen. The results show that the hydrogels containing β-tricalcium phosphate, with or without collagen type I incorporation enhances cell growth and differentiation in vitro before implants.
