The Oxford Spherical Mill for Metaphyseal Debridement in Open Epiphyseal Reduction and Internal Fixation for Slipped Capital Femoral Epiphysis

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) is an adolescent hip disorder characterized by displacement of the proximal femoral epiphysis relative to the metaphysis. The aim of treatment is to stabilize the proximal epiphysis, avoid further displacement and prevent femoral head osteonecrosis. Open reduction and internal fixation is often required to treat chronic and severe SCFE, typically using a Modified Dunn procedure. This allows anterior access to the proximal femur, epiphyseal mobilization and metaphyseal debridement of cervical callus. Debriding the cervical callus concentrically to allow accurate relocation of the epiphysis on the metaphysis can be challenging. This article describes the benefits of using the Oxford Spherical Mill from a partial knee replacement system to assist with metaphyseal debridement during open epiphyseal reduction and internal fixation for SCFE.
