Consultant
I have been a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Oxford since 2003 having been granted my Certificate in Specialist Training in 2002. I gained further sub-speciality Paediatric Orthopaedic experience, in clinical fellowships in Toronto and Oxford.
I have been Programme Director for the Trauma and Orthopaedic Specialist Trainees in the Oxford region for six years. I established a trainees’ website, www.oxbone.org and an annual trainees’ presentation day (Duthie day) which has run since 2004. As a member of the National Selection Design Group for Trauma and Orthopaedics we successfully delivered the first national selection in our speciality, and this included for the first time a practical assessment of operative skills. In 2016 I started as a member of the national Specialist Advisory Committee for Trauma and Orthopaedics.
In 2013 I was awarded a Master’s degree in Surgical Education at Imperial College, with Distinction. I have also been awarded the British Orthopaedic Association’s Robert Jones’ medal for Qualitative research work from my dissertation using Grounded Theory to illuminate the meaning of ‘a good pair of hands’ in Orthopaedic surgery.
I have been a course director for the last two years for the Oxford University Masters course in Musculoskeletal sciences. I have an interest in research that began during my year in laboratory-based research in Molecular Biology culminating with a Bachelor of Science honours degree. I am now collaborating with several multicentre research trials in Paediatric Orthopaedics. I act as a reviewer for several journals including Journal of Children’s Orthopaedics, Bone and Joint Journal, and Gait and Posture.
