Christine Bolton

DPhil student

Medical Research Council Clinical Research Training Fellow and Paediatric Doctor

Dr Chrissy Bolton graduated from the University of Cambridge and UCL, where she was awarded national and university prizes in the fields of Paediatric Health, Endocrinology, Pain Medicine, Cardiology and Ethics.

As co-investigator of a pioneering study led by Professor Lucy Wedderburn (UCL Great Ormond Street Institute of Child Health) and Professor Adam Croft (University of Birmingham), Chrissy helped to establish the feasibility of undertaking minimally-invasive tissue biopsies in children with arthritis. With the advances in fine-resolution genomic technologies, this enabled analysis of the tissue directly from the disease site. The study provided the basis for an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship investigating the persistence of inflammation in children with arthritis.

During Chrissy’s medical training she was awarded an Academic Foundation and NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship. In collaboration with Dr Holm Uhlig at the Translational Gastroenterology Unit (University of Oxford), she focused on a multi-omic analysis of single-gene causes of Inflammatory Bowel Disease, using advances in next-generation sequencing to distinguish mechanisms of inflammation. This compendium formed the basis of the UK’s National Genomic Test Directory for funded NHS testing in Inflammatory Bowel Disease. Whilst working as a Paediatric/Foundation doctor and undertaking research, she studied Genomic Medicine at Imperial University, obtained Membership of the Royal College of Paediatric and Child Health and gained a Diploma in Sexual and Reproductive Health.
