The aim of my DPhil project is to study the effect of systemic inflammatory diseases on haematopoiesis. Previous studies, including those by Dr Griseri, indicate that systemic inflammation causes changes in the numbers and activity of haematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) in the bone marrow and also causes accumulation of HSPCs at extramedullary sites, where they may contribute to the progression of disease. We use models of spondyloarthropathy and inflammatory bowel disease to investigate these changes with the intention that greater understanding will permit the development of targeted therapies in future.
Before coming to Oxford, I graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2010 with degrees in pathology and veterinary medicine. Over the last four years, I completed advanced clinical training at the Royal Veterinary College (University of London), receiving the diplomas of the American and European Colleges of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 2016. During this time, I also investigated the autoimmune response of dogs with immune-mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA); I received an International Canine Health Award from the Kennel Club Charitable Trust for this work in 2015.
