I am a first year DPhil student in the group of Dr Jagdeep Nanchahal. I am from Ireland, where I received my B.Sc. in Pharmacology from the University College Dublin. I have always been highly interested in regeneration, immunology and cellular signalling pathways, how they work and how alterations in the pathway can both induce and reverse disease.
My project involves investigating whether the administration of an endogenous molecule can enhance regeneration of fatty liver disease, specifically in the context of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease(NAFLD/ Non-alcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH). To investigate this I have been generating stem-cell derived liver organoids and treating them with fatty acids to generate a 3D model of NAFLD/NASH and test this compound.
I also enjoy playing hockey, rowing and volunteering in my spare time. I have joined 'The Brilliant Club' programme to get involved with public engagement. As part of the programme I will tutor students from less advantaged schools, with the aim of helping to support their progression to higher level education.
I have really enjoyed my project and time in Oxford so far and feel very fortunate to have access to such advanced technologies and techniques to investigate my project, as well as to have all the excellent researchers train me and help troubleshoot problems.
