Orthopaedic outpatient waiting lists remain long. Many patients are referred with conditions not requiring surgery. During the first year of a specialist shoulder assessment clinic run by an extended scope physiotherapy practitioner in a district general hospital, 130 patients were assessed with an average waiting time of 58 days and 50% of patients were treated by physiotherapy alone.
