We are interested in studying all aspects of rare disease of the musculoskeletal system. At present we are prioritising disorders including skeletal dysplasia / metabolic bone diseases, vasculitides, arthritides and connective tissue diseases, rare reactions to bone therapies and myeloma.

We will be studying patients who suffer with traumatic shoulder dislocations and seeing if there is any benefit to them of having shoulder surgery after their first dislocation compared to having non-operative treatments such as physiotherapy in preventing further problems.

UKUFF
The UKUFF Trial (funded by the Department of Health’s NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme) is a multi-centre randomised controlled trial to measure the clinical and cost effectiveness of different types of surgery for rotator cuff repairs. The study started in 2008 and was completed in 2014.
BisCK
Patients with chronic kidney impairment suffer from bone fragility. Yet, most fracture protective therapies are contraindicated for them due to uncertainty on specific safety issues. We will use anonymised electronic medical records data from patients who have used first line anti-osteoporosis treatments (i.e. The so called bisphosphonates) to explore their potential benefits (fracture risk reduction) and risks.
