Amar is a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery with academic faculty appointments at the University of York as well as with NDORMS at the University of Oxford. He is a specialist shoulder surgeon based at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.
Amar holds the Mary Kinross Trust and Royal College of Surgeons Chair in Surgical Trials and Health Sciences, which is a joint appointment between University of York Health Sciences and Hull York Medical School. Throughout his career, he has headed a number of important clinical trials in trauma and orthopaedic surgery.
The Fellowship recognises remarkable contributions to advancing medical science, groundbreaking research discoveries and translating developments into benefits for patients and the wider public.
On receiving the Fellowship, Amar said: ‘I am delighted and honoured to have been elected to the Academy Fellowship. I owe it to my very talented colleagues, patients and public contributors who work with me in embedding impactful surgical research in the NHS, which continues to have a global influence. I now look forward to contributing to the influential work of the Academy.’
NDORMS Head of Department Professor Jonathan Rees said: ‘I have worked closely with Amar for many years, and I am personally thrilled to see him recognised as a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences for his important work in orthopaedic surgical research. It demonstrates his research leadership and dedication to improving treatments for orthopaedic patients.’
