Our overall focus is on the development and evaluation of surgical therapies for diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system. The department houses one of the largest groups of academic surgeons globally. Our broad research portfolio includes:

Groups within this theme

The Dakin Group undertakes translational research focusing on identifying the cellular and molecular basis of inflammatory fibrotic soft tissue joint diseases, with research programmes on tendinopathy, frozen shoulder and knee arthrofibrosis. Understanding the cellular and molecular basis of these diseases will inform new therapeutic approaches targeting tissue resident stromal cells of the joint, to promote resolution of inflammatory fibrotic disease.

Our group aims to understand the biology of common hand conditions, as well as other related surgical disorders. We use this knowledge to develop and test new treatments for these disabling conditions. We also investigate the epidemiology of hand and upper limb conditions, including hand trauma, to guide best practice.

Our research focuses on hip osteoarthritis, from identifying its causes to developing new surgery techniques for the condition.

We are a collaborative group of academic researchers, therapists, physicians, and surgeons. We carry out a wide range of studies in patients, including observational studies of disease, basic science studies on patient-donated tissue and clinical trials of new treatments. Our ultimate aim is to improve the care of patients with hand and wrist problems.

Hand Research Group

Our research aims to improve people's health and wellbeing by making the most efficient use of health and social care resources. To achieve this, we use real-world data and mathematical models to evaluate the costs and consequences of applying different interventions over a period of time, often the entire lifetime of patients.

Health Economics & Outcomes Research

Plastic surgery is a small surgical specialty covering hand surgery, trauma, congenital defects, burns and cancer. Plastic surgeons work with all other surgical specialties to undertake complex reconstructions and save lives.
