Sheraz R. Markar is Director of NDS SITU, overseeing a broad portfolio of surgical clinical trials within SITU, and his own primary research focusing on the management of upper gastrointestinal diseases. In this role he supports the full pathway of surgical trial development from initial design, funding application, trial set-up and implementation. Sheraz is chief investigator for the national UK SARONG trial (Surveillance After Resection of Oesophageal aNd Gastric cancer) funded by the NIHR-HTA and the intentaional GOLF trial (Double-blind RCT for Gastro-Oesophageal reflux disease; Linx management system vs. Fundoplication). 

He is a consultant oesophago-gastric surgeon, with the focus of his clinical practice and his research being the surgical management of patients with malignant and benign (including gastro-oesophageal reflux) oesophageal and gastric disease. He has undertaken two PhDs concerning the diagnosis and management of oesophageal and gastric cancer and his current primary research interests are concerning survivorship and surveillance following oesophageal and gastric cancer treatment, and standardisation of surgical quality assessment in upper gastrointestinal surgery. 

In 2019, he was awarded the prestigious Rising Star award by the United European Gastroenterology and in 2020 he was awarded the Hunterian Professorship by the Royal College of Surgeons of England. Sheraz is Surgical Specialty Lead in Oesophageal cancer, Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons for Great Britain & Ireland (AUGIS) and Deputy Chair of the NIHR pre-application support fund panel.
