Professor Stephanie Dakin, group leader of the Dakin lab group, reflects on what she's learnt as a supervisor to DPhil and MSc(Res) students over the past decade.

Steph Dakin's team I have had the privilege of supervising 11 DPhil and MSc(Res) students to successful completion over the past decade. Some of these students have been clinical fellows, others non-clinicians, all of the research projects I have supervised have been wet-lab focused projects. I’ve learned something from each of the students I have had the pleasure to supervise and realised that we all work in different ways to achieve a common goal.

Some of our clinical fellow DPhil students have gone on to pursue specialist clinical training in orthopaedics and trauma, other students transitioned into working for global management consulting firms, non-clinicians have taken career paths towards pharma or postdoctoral training, remaining within academia. This is the beautyDakin group photo of PGR training, it provides an abundance of translational and transferable skills and training with an emphasis on problem solving, which is a key component of many jobs.

Some exciting aspects of being a DPhil at NDORMS include:

  • The opportunity to be part of a team of world leading experts conducting cutting-edge research within the medical sciences
  • The breadth of the research conducted in NDORMS and within the Medical Sciences Division is extensive, covering a spectrum of discovery lab based research, though to experimental medicine and translational research
  • The College environment adds a new dimension and exposure to staff and students working in diverse areas beyond the Medical Sciences, e.g., journalism, business, humanities, mathematics, the arts

‘Working at the Dakin Group was amazing. It’s an inspiring environment with supportive people where I really learned a lot about high quality research. This experience has allowed me to pursue research throughout my medical career and in my current role as a registrar in orthopaedics and trauma in the Netherlands’.
