Physiotherapist interested in evaluating the clinical and cost effectiveness of different rehabilitation approaches for musculoskeletal injuries
My research focusses on improving rehabilitation for people after a recent kneecap dislocation. After this injury, patients are routinely referred to physiotherapy for exercise-based rehabilitation. Despite this, there is little evidence to guide physiotherapy treatment and patient outcomes are highly variable. During my DPhil, I will lead a pilot trial with an embedded qualitative component that will determine if a full-scale trial comparing different rehabilitation approaches is feasible. This would provide high-quality evidence to create clinical guidelines for the physiotherapy treatment of this injury.
After qualifying as a physiotherapist from University College Dublin in 2012, I worked as a musculoskeletal physiotherapist across a variety of healthcare settings. Since 2017, I have specialised in orthopaedic trauma rehabilitation at Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, where I still hold an honorary contract. Through this clinical role, I have provided the interventions and/or collected data for several multicentre NIHR funded trials in orthopaedic trauma.
I have been previously awarded a NIHR-funded Masters in Clinical Research (2017 to 2019) and a NIHR Oxford BRC Preparatory Research Career Fellowship (2019 to 2021). I am completing this DPhil as part of a NIHR Doctoral Fellowship.
