Academic plastic surgery trainee interested in clinical effectiveness of interventions in reconstructive surgery and hand surgery

About

I am an NIHR Doctoral Research Fellow and DPhil candidate in Musculoskeletal Sciences.  My research focuses on understanding and preventing surgical site infection following surgery for hand and wrist injuries. Hand trauma is common and can be severely debilitating for a large number of people in the UK. Hand and wrist injuries account for about 1 in 5 A&E attendances, culminating in around 5 million injuries per year in the UK. We know very little about infection in this group and there are few clinical trials of interventions to prevent infection after hand trauma surgery. My research will  build our knowledge in this area, enabling us to treat patients with these injuries more effectively.

Prior to starting my DPhil, I completed an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellowship in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at NDORMS and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, which took me to the end of my ST5 year of training. My undergraduate training took place at the University of East Anglia, where I attained my MB/BS and Master of Health Research (MRes) with distinction. I undertook my foundation years and core surgical training in London at St. Mary's Hospital, Chelsea and Westminster Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.

I am interested in clinical research in plastic and reconstructive surgery with a focus on systematic review and meta-analysis, clinical trials and outcome measurement.
