Research Culture Toolkit
The Research Culture Toolkit project is a collaborative university-wide initiative to develop a consistent approach to supporting departments, faculties and colleges to strengthen their research culture and to map the current research culture landscape across organisational units.
During the summer, NDORMS took part in the Research Culture Toolkit project pilot, led by the MSD Research culture facilitators team. The aim was to trial the Research Culture Toolkit and to gather feedback on both the content of the toolkit and the process of data gathering. Participation in the pilot, alongside other departments, faculties and colleges, offered us an opportunity to voice local needs and priorities in the development of the toolkit.
Using a structured framework, the toolkit aims to:
- Clarify the scope of research culture activities
- Communicate existing policies and activities at institutional and divisional level
- Capture information related to research culture initiatives.

The toolkit includes a list of topics and subtopics covering various aspects of research culture, aligned with the University’s three priority areas: rigorous research practice, valuing diverse contributions, and supporting the career development of researchers including:
- A small number of case studies that can highlight examples of good practice and/or innovation
- The roll out of 10 CPD days
- Activities and inspiration for research practice
- Sustainability and how we achieved LEAF certification in our labs
- PPI and engagement
- How we support research careers
- Support for funding…
- Among many other things.
