The NIHR Academic Clinical lectureship is a four-year post, 50% clinical training and 50% research. The Lectureship will allow Justin to complete his training in plastic and reconstructive surgery, whilst developing his research portfolio at NDORMS.
The NIHR Development and Skills Enhancement Award will support Justin’s training and development as a surgical trialist over the next two years, which will include further training in research methods, especially in platform trials and health economics.
On receiving the NIHR awards, Justin said ‘Thanks to this continued support from the NIHR, I will now be able to continue my work with Oxford Trauma, focusing on developing clinical trials in plastics and hand trauma. Alongside this, I will be taking on a new role as Deputy Director of SITU NDORMS, supporting the design and delivery of more surgical trials in plastic surgery and other surgical specialties. I’m grateful to the team at NDORMS, especially Prof. Matt Costa, Prof. Dom Furniss and Prof. David Beard who have supported these grant applications and provided continued mentorship and guidance.’
Director of SITU-NDORMS Professor David Beard said ‘Simply delighted to have Justin join our merry growing band at SITU NDORMS as Deputy Director. Now post DPhil, his strong national connections (RCS and specialist interest groups), plastic/orthoplastic expertise both clinically and in trials (HAWAII, NEON), links with NDORMS Oxford Trauma and his approach/interest in surgical evaluation, will all be a great asset to our future development and progress.

Justin’s research concentrates on surgical trials in plastic surgery, hand trauma and reconstruction, including mitigation of surgical site infection and effectiveness of antimicrobial interventions.
Before completing his NIHR Doctoral Research Fellowship and DPhil at NDORMS, Justin was an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at NDORMS and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust.
