The Steering Group
The PSP is managed by a Steering Group and is chaired by an independent adviser from the James Lind Alliance. The Steering Group includes individual patient representatives as well as clinicians and information specialists.
The role of the Steering Group is to oversee the PSP. They are responsible for a number of tasks, including but not limited to; publicising the initiative, overseeing the checking and collating of uncertainties, and taking the final priorities to research funders.

Jenny Gould, Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) member Jenny has personal experience of many orthopaedic operations at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre, and has been a participant in a number of research trials. Professionally she is an experienced stress management consultant, trainer and psychotherapist (cognitive behavioural therapist, clinical hypnotherapist). Jenny is also a trainer for Relate. Jenny is a PPI co-applicant on several WHITE (hip trauma) research trials. |

Richard Grant, UNTRAP, NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Heath Research and Care West Midlands Patient & Public Involvement (CLAHRC WM PPI) Richard was previously a science and biology teacher in a multicultural comprehensive school and an elected councillor in Warwickshire. He is keen that skills and experiences gained are effectively used in the physical and mental health agenda. A member of Warwick Medical School UNTRAP and CLAHRC WM. Personal family 'health' experiences include, cancer, dementia, care of older people and LGBT issues. He enjoys gaining life experiences 'first hand' by travelling or through reading and literature. |

David Keene, DPhil MCS (representing Rebecca Kearney while on MAT leave) David is a NIHR post-doctoral research fellow based at the University of Oxford. He is a physiotherapist by background. The clinical focus of his research is on improving the management of musculoskeletal injuries. He is a research lead for the Association of Trauma and Orthopaedic Chartered Physiotherapists (ATOCP). |
Matthew Costa, PhD FRCS (Tr&Orth,) Oxford Trauma, University of Oxford Matthew is Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. Matt's research interest is in clinical and cost effectiveness of musculoskeletal trauma interventions. He is Chief Investigator for a series of randomised trials and associated studies supported by grants from the UK NIHR, Musculoskeletal Charities and the Trauma Device Industry. His work has been cited widely, and informs many guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence |
Mark Baxter, PhD, MBChB, MRCP, British Geriatric Society English National Council member of the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN) Mark is a consultant at the University Hospital Southampton and specialises in geriatric medicine. He is experienced in the management of frail elderly people, with multiple medical problems. Dr Baxter also has extensive experience in the assessment of falls and bone health. |

Stuart White, The Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland (AAGBI) Stuart is the lead for Anaesthesia, Brighton Hip Fracture Unit, and designer of the www.hipfractureanaesthesia.com website. Stuart is determined to reduce variability in anaesthesia care for hip fracture patients in UK through research and audit. |
Tim Chesser, Falls & Fragility Fracture Audit Project (FFFAP, NHFD), British Orthopaedic Association (BOA), Orthopaedic Trauma Society (OTS) Tim is a Consultant Trauma Orthopaedic Surgeon at North Bristol NHS Trust. He is the past Chair of the BOA Trauma Group, president elect of the OTS, lead for the BOA on hip fracture care and sits on the board of the Falls Fragility Fracture Audit Project, which includes the National Hip Fracture Database. He sits on the Clinical Development Group for the National Institute of Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) Hip Fracture Guidelines (CG 124). He has researched and published extensively on hip fracture care and other areas of orthopaedic trauma. He also has an international FIA drivers license racing a 1969 Mark 1 Ford Escort. |
Xavier Griffin, PhD, FRCS (Tr&Orth), Cochrane Bone, Joint & Muscle Trauma Xavier is Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford and Honorary Consultant Trauma Surgeon at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford. He is Chief Investigator for NIHR randomised clinical trials and has also received commercially funded grants. His research interest is in clinical and cost effectiveness of musculoskeletal trauma interventions. Xavier serves in the Reserve Forces and believes that his military training has provided him with transferable skills enabling him to enhance his medical and research career. |
