Activities and resources for schools and their students
Have you thought of a career in Medical Research?
NDORMS is hosting a series of online talks/conversations with scientists from NDORMS and other University of Oxford Medical Science departments for Y12/13 students. These will be a mix of information about both the scientists careers and their research work with plenty of time for Q&As on either.
These talks are a joint initiative between two departments in the Oxford University Medical Sciences Division (NDORMS and NDS)
Talks will be run as a zoom webinar and each session with three researchers takes 45-60minutes. If you would like to attend the talks please sign up using the links below. A link to the recording of the talks will be posted here after it happens

Speakers
Dr Tarrion Baird : Careering into Computational Biology
Leaving school with no clear idea what I wanted to do, I considered everything from maths to floristry, and eventually settled on biochemistry. Having then spent many years in a lab doing cancer research, I have now made another career change and become a computational biologist studying inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr Veerle Brans: from Bubbles, to Back Pain and Beyond - My Journey into Biomedical Engineering
I've always loved science but doubted if I was 'clever enough' for subjects like physics. In this talk, I'll share how I overcame obstacles, like illness, and found my passion in Biomedical Engineering. Guided by motto's like 'all roads lead to Rome' and 'nothing ventured, nothing gained', I'll show how science is for everyone, and there is no such thing as the wrong choice.
Eve Warner : Entering the workplace and discovering what clicks
Having started working an office job after completing a BSc in Biology, I came to a realisation that it was not for me despite good prospects. While impacted by lockdown measures, I lost my office job. I was lucky enough to secure a laboratory technician role following this, and with this first foot in the door in the broad scientific sector, I was able to try several roles at various organisations. These include a biomedical device manufacturer, diagnostic lab, and vaccine development and manufacturing company. All these experiences taught me about what I value in work and in the workplace. Now, after two years at NDS within the Oxford Radcliffe Biobank, I have been promoted to Biobank Co-ordinator, and manage the operations and a team while contributing to medical research. My talk will cover my career journey and the lessons learned along the way.
