CONsolidated Standards Of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) for reporting randomized trials in journal and conference abstracts was developed as an extension of the CONSORT statement to provide a list of essential items that authors should include when reporting the main results of a randomized trial in the abstract of a journal article or in a conference abstract. The CONSORT for Abstracts checklist for reporting an abstract of a randomized trial recommends including information about the objectives, design, participants, interventions intended for each randomized group and their effect on primary efficacy outcomes and harms, conclusions, registration name and number, and source of funding. Journal and conference abstracts should contain sufficient information about a trial to provide an accurate record of its conduct and findings, providing optimal information about the trial within the space constraints of the abstract format.
