Introduction to Clinical Trials
Clinical trials have perhaps never before had so much exposure on news media. During the COVID pandemic, the setting up of clinical trials was often headline news, let alone announcements of the findings.
However, notwithstanding the public interest, clinical trials are complex, multifaceted research projects that require a range of expertise to conduct. Many people from various backgrounds are now involved in clinical trials through various roles. Clinical trials also come in many shapes and forms, including the familiar “standard” randomised controlled trial (RCT).
This section of the CSM website provides some starter information on clinical trials and RCTs in particular, along with short articles on topics related to clinical trials.

What are clinical trials and how are they used to advance healthcare knowledge? Clinical trials are usually classified into four phases, depending on the goal and size of the trial.
Everyone knows about a “standard” 2-arm RCT, but there are lots of variations in RCTs designs. Alternative trial designs include adaptive designs, and much more.
To help continue your learning, I've compiled a short, non-exhaustive list of books, articles, and websites that I have found helpful or an enjoyable read.
