Building better workplace relationships
Mediation is a confidential, voluntary and informal process that helps you talk issues through with your colleague(s) and an impartial
mediator to find a way forward. The mediators will meet everyone individually before facilitating a joint session with all the parties.
Mediation works because it helps people find practical solutions that feel fair to everyone.
WHO IS MEDIATION FOR?
The NDORMS Mediation Service is available to all members of staff and students in the Department who find themselves in conflict with another member of staff or student.
Conflict is a normal part of life, both in and out of work. Conflict itself is not good or bad – it is how it is managed that is important. When managed effectively, conflict can create a wealth of opportunities for growth, development and change.
WHAT SITUATIONS COULD MEDIATION BE USEFUL IN?
A wide range of disputes can be referred. Workplace mediation cases typically include issues relating to relationship breakdowns, personality clashes, communication problems, sickness absence due to work-related stress, allegations of bullying and harassment, allegations of discrimination, and post-grievance recommendations.
MEET OUR WORKPLACE MEDIATORS
The NDORMS Mediators are Maria Granell-Moreno and Isuara Thomas. They are trained experts in helping people to communicate more effectively with each other. They will not judge, interrogate or tell people what to do.
The Mediators are here to help parties get clarity about their situation, facilitate a conversation, and help to reach a conclusion that both parties are happy with.
If you feel like this could help you, please get in touch. Anything we talk about will be treated confidentially.
I have a Masters in Mediation, Conflict Management and Resolution from Barcelona University. I am also an accredited Workplace Mediator trained by Consensio. Before joining the department, I worked as a family and community mediator for four years in Barcelona. That professional journey reminded me that conflict is a part of life and it is the way we choose to manage it that makes a difference. I am currently also a volunteer mediator at the Student Resolution Service at SWSS.
I am an accredited Workplace Mediator trained by Consensio. I genuinely believe that conflict is neither good nor bad, it is the way we manage it that can be an opportunity for positive change.
Louise Cotterell, DPAG EDI Officer
I joined the NDORMS mediation team in 2022 and will be an accredited Workplace mediator trained by Consensio by the end of May 2022. I will be working with Isuara and Maria to support colleagues to resolve conflict in a safe space, and at an early stage, so that they can repair and build on workplace relationships.
